Program Overview

The Associate of Applied Science in Health Information Management prepares students with the academic knowledge, technical skills, and professional competencies required to manage healthcare information throughout its entire lifecycle. Students learn how health information is collected, organized, protected, analyzed, retrieved, and securely maintained to support quality patient care, healthcare operations, reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and organizational decision-making.

The program combines classroom instruction with practical learning experiences in electronic health records (EHR), medical coding, healthcare databases, health information systems, clinical documentation, privacy and compliance, healthcare analytics, reimbursement processes, and information governance.

Semester 1 — Foundations of Health Information Management

Students establish foundational knowledge in healthcare systems, professional communication, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, healthcare delivery systems, and the principles of Health Information Management.



Semester 2 — Health Records, Coding & Information Governance

Students develop technical competencies in electronic health records, health data standards, medical coding, information governance, healthcare law, privacy, confidentiality, and information security.


Semester 3 — Healthcare Data Management & Analytics

Students strengthen their knowledge of healthcare information systems, healthcare databases, interoperability, data quality management, healthcare analytics, clinical documentation improvement, revenue cycle operations, and medical billing.

Semester 4 — Compliance, Professional Practice & Capstone

Students complete advanced studies in compliance, healthcare risk management, emerging healthcare technologies, artificial intelligence, professional practice experience, and a comprehensive Health Information Management capstone project.
