Program Overview
The Professional Certificate in Medical Assisting at Texas Business School prepares students for entry-level clinical and administrative roles within physician offices, outpatient clinics, ambulatory healthcare facilities, medical practices, and related healthcare environments.
This six-month, workforce-focused program combines foundational medical science with hands-on clinical training. Students develop practical skills in patient intake, vital signs, examination-room preparation, infection prevention, specimen collection, phlebotomy, point-of-care testing, electrocardiography (EKG), electronic health records, patient coordination, healthcare documentation, and medical-office administration.
Through instructor-led instruction, clinical skills laboratories, healthcare simulations, EHR practice, competency assessments, and a supervised clinical externship, students gain experience applying their knowledge in realistic healthcare environments. The program emphasizes patient safety, professional communication, accurate documentation, confidentiality, clinical workflow, and responsible practice under appropriate supervision.

Why Study This Program?
Build Practical Clinical Skills
Students develop hands-on experience with essential medical assisting procedures, including patient intake, vital-sign measurement, patient preparation, infection-control practices, specimen collection, phlebotomy-related procedures, point-of-care testing, and EKG procedures.
Learn Both Clinical & Administrative Medical Assisting
Medical assistants often support both patient care and healthcare-office operations. Students therefore develop skills in electronic health records, appointment scheduling, patient registration, referrals, documentation, insurance concepts, medical-office workflows, and patient communication alongside their clinical training.
Train Through Healthcare Simulations & Clinical Labs
The program moves beyond classroom theory through structured clinical laboratories and healthcare simulations. Students practice procedures, use clinical equipment and simulated healthcare systems, complete skills assessments, and prepare for supervised workplace experience.
Gain Supervised Clinical Experience
Students complete a 90-hour supervised clinical externship where they can apply their academic and clinical training in an approved healthcare environment. Externship activities depend on the clinical site’s authorization, student competency, and applicable supervision requirements.
Prepare for Professional Certification Pathways
The curriculum includes content that may support students who choose to pursue external medical assisting certification, including the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) credential. External certification is separate from the TBS institutional certificate and is subject to the certification organization’s current requirements.
