Program Overview
The Professional Certificate in Phlebotomy at Texas Business School is a six-month, workforce-focused healthcare program designed to prepare students with the knowledge, practical skills, and clinical experience required for entry-level phlebotomy and laboratory support roles.

Program Objectives
The Professional Certificate in Phlebotomy is designed to develop the technical, clinical, and professional competencies needed to support blood collection and laboratory operations.
Students develop the ability to safely prepare and identify patients, perform trained venipuncture and capillary collection procedures, handle and process specimens, apply infection-prevention practices, maintain specimen integrity, use appropriate laboratory technologies, and communicate professionally with patients and healthcare teams.
The program also prepares students to recognize situations requiring additional assistance or intervention and to perform only procedures appropriate to their training and level of supervision.

Graduates will also be able to apply infection-prevention and workplace-safety procedures, support point-of-care testing, maintain appropriate documentation, use healthcare information systems, protect patient confidentiality, and demonstrate professional communication and workplace conduct.
Program Structure
Phlebotomy Foundations
Students develop a strong foundation in medical terminology, vascular anatomy, blood composition, circulation, specimen types, laboratory documentation, and the role of the phlebotomy professional within healthcare teams.
Patient Safety & Professional Practice
Students learn patient identification, preparation, communication, infection prevention, standard precautions, bloodborne-pathogen safety, sharps safety, confidentiality, professional ethics, and quality-assurance principles.
Blood Collection & Venipuncture
The hands-on portion of the program focuses on routine blood collection, venipuncture, capillary collection, equipment selection, tube and additive identification, order of draw, specimen labeling, complication management, and post-collection patient care.
Specimen Processing & Laboratory Technology
Students progress into special collection procedures, point-of-care testing, specimen processing, centrifugation, aliquoting, specimen storage and transportation, laboratory information systems, documentation, and quality-control procedures.
Clinical Externship
The program concludes with a 90-hour supervised clinical externship, allowing students to apply their training in an approved clinical environment and gain practical workplace experience.
